Big Data has exploded in recent years. As a result, many businesses have come to a crossroads: invest more to scale up their legacy Oracle system, or make the move to another RDBMS to be able to increase the functionality and capabilities of their business.

As one of the first relational database systems on the market, the Oracle RDBMS, has led the database industry for decades. Businesses built their entire IT system around the database and hired employees for their Oracle specializations, which furthered the Company’s hold on the industry and made it seem like a near impossible feat for businesses to switch databases. But over time, as Big Data has grown, Oracle has become cost prohibitive for many businesses.

There are four primary reasons to migrate Oracle-based applications to a scale-out architecture:

This all sounds good in theory, but if businesses seeking these benefits could plausibly migrate from Oracle, why haven’t they already?

Because back when Oracle came about, businesses had to use this service if they were looking for an RDBMS. As time went on, these businesses invested heavily in both Oracle infrastructure and trained personnel. After investing so heavily into one company, it became difficult to justify a switch, especially when the alternative is not guaranteed to work. Due to the singularity of Oracle’s platform, many competitors through the years were not able to create a platform that directly supported the work being done in PL/SQL through Oracle’s platforms. With PL/SQL being such an old language, the systems must be semantically equivalent and have the same set of operations as the Oracle database to plausibly and successfully migrate applications. Otherwise, every line of PL/SQL must be re-written while being transferred. This creates a new set of headaches with additional system testing and debugging after the PL/SQL re-write.

With the launch of Splice Machine’s PL/SQL support, businesses can now move legacy applications off of Oracle, even if they have been unchanged for years, and can benefit from modern capabilities that are best delivered on a scale-out architecture. This new addition will reduce the migrating cost as well as increase overall savings by using a modern scale-out database. Users will also benefit from reduced ETL lag with Splice Machine’s support of both transactional and analytical workloads. Splice Machine is the only Hadoop-based solution to complete both the TPC-C (transactional) and TPC-H (analytical) test suites, and is the only database to demonstrate running both of these workloads concurrently, offering an architectural foundation for operational and analytical applications in a single platform.

The migration process from Oracle has historically been difficult, but Splice Machine has challenged the industry by offering a cost-effective alternative to Oracle with a simplified migration process. JoLee Sasakamoose’s research explores the intergenerational effects of historical trauma with Indigenous peoples and the use of traditional healing methods in the promotion of health and wellbeing.

SASKATOON

After more than a decade of working with Indigenous groups in defining healthy communities, JoLee Sasakamoose has assumed leadership of the Indigenous Peoples’ Health Research Centre as the new director, under the guidance of the Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy.

An Anishinabe (Ojibwe) from the Three Fires Confederacy in Michigan and Ontario, with membership in M’Chigeeng First Nation and an active citizen of Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation, Sasakamoose’s appointment was effective Jan. 1.

“I am honored and accept this opportunity to lead a nationally-recognized research centre that harmonizes Indigenous knowledges to restore Indigenous health capacity,” said Sasakamoose.

“Our strength will be in our partnerships and engaging Indigenous peoples in developing the way forward. We are at a time of tremendous change and we have the opportunity to shape the provincial health landscape within Saskatchewan and beyond.”

Sasakamoose’s research explores the intergenerational effects of historical trauma with Indigenous peoples and the use of traditional healing methods in the promotion of health and wellbeing. In partnership with the First Nations communities of Saskatchewan, she co-authored the Indigenous Cultural Responsiveness Theory, a theoretical framework to improve wellbeing of Indigenous peoples.

In January, Sasakamoose and University of Saskatchewan clinician Dr. Stuart Skinner were awarded a $2 million Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR) grant to refine and expand an on-reserve diagnosis and treatment program (Know Your Status) for HIV, hepatitis C virus and sexually transmitted blood-borne infections.

Crowdfunding is a way of raising finance by asking a large number of people each for a small amount of money. Traditionally, financing a business, project or venture involved asking a few people for large sums of money. Crowdfunding switches this idea around, using the internet to talk to thousands – if not millions – of potential funders. Typically, those seeking funds will set up a profile of their project on a website such as those run by our members. They can then use social media, alongside traditional networks of friends, family and work acquaintances, to raise money. Below is a brief description of each of the different type of crowdfunding.

Donation / Reward Crowdfunding

People invest simply because they believe in the cause. Rewards can be offered (often called reward crowdfunding), such as acknowledgements on an album cover, tickets to an event, regular news updates, free gifts and so on. Returns are considered intangible. Donors have a social or personal motivation for putting their money in and expect nothing back, except perhaps to feel good about helping the project. Debt Crowdfunding

Investors receive their money back with interest. Also called Peer-to-Peer (p2p) lending, it allows for the lending of money while bypassing traditional banks. Returns are financial, but investors also have the benefit of having contributed to the success of an idea they believe in. In the case of microfinance, where very small sums of money are leant to the very poor, most often in developing countries, no interest is paid on the loan and the lender is rewarded by doing social good. Equity Crowdfunding

People invest in an opportunity in exchange for equity. Money is exchanged for a shares, or a small stake in the business, project or venture. As with other types of shares, apart from community shares, if it is successful the value goes up. If not, the value goes down. A Little Bit Of History

The first online crowdfunded project is thought to have occurred in 1997. Rock band Marillion were unable to afford to tour after the release of their seventh album so American fans used the then fledgling internet to raise $60,000 so they could play in the US. Although the band wasn’t involved in the first round of fundraising, they have since used the same techniques to successfully fund the production of their following three albums. Since then, this marketplace has grown substantially.
